RE: Marketing to Women Bloggers

For companies looking to advertise to women online - one option may be targeted ads to women bloggers. Roughly 52% of all bloggers are now women (Source: Synovate/Marketing Daily 2007).

But think beyond Google Ad Sense...

BlogHer advertising reaches more than 7.6 million unique women each month through their network of 1,100 blogs and the BlogHer.com community. Ad opportunities include targeted sponsorships, special offers, video pre-roll, and custom promotions.

The Women's Blog Advertising Network (WBAN) has also recently been revamped -- with 130 of the most diverse and the most popular women bloggers in the United States. The network features female political bloggers, sex bloggers, gossip bloggers, news bloggers and more. Blog ad rates begin at $75 and premium sponsorships average $400.

Women Making News: The Week In Review

ARE WOMEN GETTING AHEAD?
By Alice Krause

Women Making News This Week:
Women picked up some big marketing and communications jobs this week as you can see from the list above. Women were put on a number of blue chip company boards this week as well; Del Monte, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Macy's (number four for them), Staples, St. Jude Medical, General Mills, and Kraft. When you read this list, you have to be encouraged about the progress being made by women in business. Yet statistics and studies often yield less positive results. So I took a look at some salary data using the new salary calculator on www.newsonwomen.com. It definitely shows gender differentials, but I also saw that salaries are affected by a number of other factors including job type, location, education, and industry. Yes, gender is still an issue, but I wonder how much of the differential is due to education, experience, location, industry and job type rather than gender. Education specifically can increase your salary dramatically. So my mantra of Education Leads to Leadership should be expanded to Education Leads to Leadership and More Money!

Are we getting ahead? Complicated, but day after day I read about individual women who are. Statistics don't lie, but they don't tell the whole story either. Next time, at the beginning of the new year, I will look over 2007 and see - did women get ahead? I believe the answer is yes.

RE: New Sheriff at National Women's Business Council.

Sandy Bartow, current executive director of the Jacksonville Women's Business Center and Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce Small Business Center, has been appointed to the National Women's Business Council. Bartow, a former SBA National Women in Business Advocate Award winner, was honored by the Jacksonville Business Journal with the "Individual Mentor Award" earlier this month. She'll serve a 3-year term.

RE: And Research Shows...Nothing Important, As Usual.

Make way for another ridiculous research study. The news is peppered today with the oddest headlines:

Was this ever really a question lurking in the back of some man's mind? Go figure. Our next investigative report? Why men with beer bellies don't tip over. Film at 11.

RE: Appoint A Diversity Officer; Shatter the Glass Ceiling.

Today the Chicago Sun Times shines a spotlight on the 20-something year old McDonald's Women's Leadership Network and Deloitte's Initiative for the Retention and Advancement of Women. McDonald's boasts an impressive roster of women on their executive leadership team. At McDonald's, women make up 28% of the company's corporate officers, and 15% of its directors are women. Deloitte's number of women partners, principals and directors is the highest of the Big Four accounting firms. Last year 32 percent of those admitted to Deloitte partnership were women.

The secrets behind diversity success at Deloitte and McDonalds?

  1. appointing a Diversity Officer;
  2. establishing accountability;
  3. creating a company-wide program with regular planning forums;
  4. and infusing the program with formalized mentoring.
Earlier this year, TIME Magazine reviewed a controversial study by Harvard, UC Berkeley and U of Minnesota sociologists that showed that diversity training was not enough to effect the racial and gender mix of a company's top ranks.

"Analysis found no real change in the number of women and minority managers after companies began diversity training. That's right--none. Networking didn't do much, either. Mentorships did....and at companies that assigned a person or task force to oversee diversity, ensuring direct accountability for results, the number of minorities and women climbed 10% in the years following the appointment."
As another example, in 2000, women, minorities and non-U.S. citizens made up 22% of GE's officers and 29% of senior executives. When GE appointed a chief diversity officer, Deborah Elam, their ranks swelled to 34% among officers and 40% of senior execs.

TO BE THE NEWS, OR NOT TO BE?
By Alice Krause

Women Making News This Week:
Math and Technology were front and center this week on www.newsonwomen.com. Congratulations to Isha, Janelle and Amanda, the high school seniors in the news who swept the top prizes at the 2007-08 Siemens Competition for Math, Science and Technology. This is first time in the competition's history all the top prizes went to women. In other news, a number of women landed some top jobs. I wrote about two CEO's, two presidents, a CTO, a CMO, and a CRO - not bad for one week. Many of the week's appointments in the news were at technology companies. I also wrote about some studies recently released on women business owners in Massachusetts and Florida that showed the significant impact women led businesses have on the economy. Another study released by the Financial Women's Association of New York this week reported that New York's Fortune 500 companies have a higher percentage of women on their boards than the Fortune 500 national average.

The week included my November report on who women are searching for on NewsonWomen.com, what I call our "Five Favorite Women". The women reporters and anchors on the new Fox Business Channel made up three of the top five most searched for women in November. This raises the interesting question of who is important - the women making the news or the women reporting it? Since people know the women reporting the news from seeing them everyday and seem to want to learn more about them, who is searched for on newsonwomen.com highlights the need for more press attention to be given to the women making the news in business to raise their visibility. It is difficult to get higher level jobs if no one knows who you are. To be the news or not to be? Read about all this and more on www.newsonwomen.com.
